Managing Director3D Systems Corporation Apr 2012 - Aug 2013Langhorne, Pensylvania3D Systems acquired my company Paramount Industries in April 2012. I continued to manage the Paramount as a 3D Systems business unit until August 2013 when the Langhorne operations was melded into Quickparts Solutions. This change allowed me to focus on several key US Air Force projects in support of major weapon systems applying high-temperature ESD compliant thermo-polymer. This material system was processed using SLS (selective laser sintering) technology. -

Patternmaker / ModelmakerParamount Industries, Inc. Nov 1966 - Dec 1970Langhorne, PennsylvaniaFoundry patternmakers served 5 year apprenticeships. Patterns were fabricated by hand using woodworking machines and hand carving tools. Patterns were typically crafted in white pine or Honduras mahogany. Iron foundries occasionally used polystyrene for one-offs patterns where they would invest the pattern. Metal patterns were used in high volume applications. Post WWII there were ~900 patternmakers in the Philadelphia league of patternmakers serving companies like Baldwin Lima Hamilton, Philadelphia Navy Yard, Worthington Pump to name a few and a scattering of job shops. The industry flourished until the '70s when foundries closed due to pollution control regulations. Business crossed borders into Canada then migrated to Japan, then Asia. Today's digital technologies like CNC machining and additive manufacturing have reengineered how things are made. The intrinsic value of a patternmaker was not just the how to make something - but the why. The why required a technical understanding of metal casting nuances, foundry practices, machining and often the actual end user application.
