The Phillips Laboratory will seek to understand protein dynamics at high spatial and temporal resolution. The primary tool that we will use is hydrogen/deuterium-exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS). From highly resolved experimental data, we will build predictive models of how this relates to key properties, such as thermodynamic stability, that underpin natural function, disease or therapy. I developed novel methods to understand protein dynamics, which I applied to the design and engineering of molecular machines.

Design and engineering of a self-assembling protein scaffold possessing a naturally occurring library of biological functionality. The laboratory of Dr E.R.G. Main was relocated to Queen Mary College, London in September 2010.

I developed methodology for the determination of the atomic-level interactions between biological molecules and inorganic surfaces. This was achieved by engineering bacteriophage viruses to bind to nanocrystals of hydroxyapatite, similar to human tooth enamel. These viruses were then imaged at sub-nanometre resolution using state of the art cryo-electron microscopy.http://leelab.berkeley.edu/
