Profile bio

About James Kavanaugh

I am a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier (Green Beret) in transition to a second career in software engineering and machine learning. I am excited to find a high-performing team where I can combine my experience in team building, mentorship, and leadership, with my education and passion for product development, software engineering, and machine learning.I'm actively looking to have a "cup of coffee" with individuals who have experience in software development, entrepreneurship, and engineering management, so I can optimize my transition to a career that matches my strengths and preferences.I've been passionate about computer programming since 1985 when my father taught me to program in BASIC. Our first family computer was a Texas Instruments 99/4A, which had a speech synthesizer but no disk drive. I bored all of my friends by writing a `for` loop that flashed the screen all 16 colors. And I have been coding ever since.I opened North Slope Software to pursue my passion for software engineering when I decided to retire from the Army. I designed and implemented a custom client relationship management program for a local marine construction company that streamlined their multi-year permitting process and helped track customer progress. I'm currently developing a computer vision assistant to monitor home security cameras and notify residents of anomalous events, like bears in the backyard or people climbing through windows.I am excited to continue my journey to develop products that harness the power of AI to bring value to user. I'm looking for software engineering jobs as an individual contributor with room to grow.

Battalion Operations Sergeant (18Z)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

As a trusted senior Special Forces Operations Sergeant (18Z) approaching retirement, I was privileged to manage and lead the 1st Special Forces Group's 4th Battalion operations (S3) and critical intelligence support to operations in the Special Warfare Fusion Cell. I served as a subject matter expert and advisor to the unit commander and staff leaders, trained new unit members, mentored soldiers, and developed the next generation of leaders.

Apr 2023 - May 2024

Indo-Pacific Regional Operations Manager (18Z)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

The culmination of my career was to manage certain special operations conducted by the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force in the Indo-Pacific theater. I served as the senior enlisted leader of a 12-person headquarters element that managed operations conducted by over 30 senior special operators and enablers. I leveraged my nearly two decades of experience to provide the commander with subject matter expertise and to recommend the way forward. But the most rewarding part of this job was working directly with some of the nation's finest special operations forces as a leader, mentor, and operational manager.

Special Forces Team Sergeant (18Z)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

Most Green Berets agree that the Special Forces Team Sergeant (18Z) is the pinnacle of a Special Forces career. As a team sergeant, I was the master trainer, manager of day-to-day operations, and leader of "actions on the objective." A senior leader for whom I have great respect once told me that the measure of a Team Sergeant is the number of team members who go on to become Team Sergeants themselves, and I was honored to serve as a mentor and leader of a distinguished group of Special Forces soldiers, half of whom went on to become leaders in their own right.

Apr 2018 - Jun 2020

Special Forces Operations And Intelligence Sergeant (18F)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

Before my Special Forces detachment deployed to Afghanistan, I was selected to attend the Special Forces Intelligence Sergeants Course and become the detachment's Intelligence Sergeant (18F). Special Forces soldiers all initially receive training on one of four specialties in addition to common tactical training: weapons, engineering, medical, and communication. Only a small number are able to serve as the detachment's sole Intelligence Sergeant. As Intelligence Sergeant I was responsible for analysis and targeting, and relied upon to serve as the assistant operations sergeant, a stepping stone for advancement to team sergeant. I served in this capacity for 6-9 month deployments to Afghanistan, Qatar, Thailand, and Korea, as well as many shorter trips.

Mar 2012 - Apr 2018

Senior Special Forces Medical Sergeant (18D)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

As a Senior Medical Sergeant, I started to contribute to the team as a peer leader in addition to handling my medical duties. During our deployment to the remote Jolo Island in the Philippines, I served as the sole medical provider for a weekly clinic that provided medical services to the local populace. Although I couldn't help everyone, I relished the opportunity to help the community residents with their nagging health problems. I pulled rotten teeth, drained abscesses, treated skin conditions, and dispensed a lot of paracetamol for children with a fever. For patients I couldn't help, like a young girl about six years old with an adhesion between her eyelid and cheek, I helped to find a higher level of care where she could get the help she needed to live a normal life.

Jan 2010 - Mar 2012

Junior Special Forces Medical Sergeant (18D)

Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord, Washington

When I arrived at my first unit, A Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, every team was at capacity for medics and the "B Team" was in excess of medics. If you have seen the TV show, "The A-Team," you may not have realized that it is based on a 12-man Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha, ODA. There is no TV show about the "B Team."But I found my way onto the Company's finest team, ODA 1214, the Military Free Fall detachment, in time for a deployment to Iraq. I participated in about 150 raids with our Iraqi partner force, Tikrit SWAT, to neutralize the roadside bomb-makers that were ravaging the coalition forces. I focused on ensuring my medical aid bag was always packed, and the aid station at our team house was ready to receive casualties. As a medic, I also had the rewarding opportunity to provide clinical medicine to our partners and locals in the community. One of the proudest achievements in my career was treating an Iraqi citizen who had sustained substantial electrical burns when he tried to connect his business to the electrical grid. He arrived at our compound with "lightning bolts" burned into his clothing, eyes had burned by the flash, and painful tissue damage. I treated him for over four months, providing wound care, pain management, and eventually countering an infection. He fully recovered with some minimal scarring, and although he was a man of modest means, he presented me with some gifts and I still treasure the red and white Shemagh he gave me, which is like a large bandana.

Sep 2007 - Jan 2010

Special Forces Trainee (18X)

Fort Liberty, North Carolina

I joined the Army as a Special Forces Recruit (18X), with the opportunity to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection if I could only make it through Infantry training, Airborne school, and the grueling Special Operations Preparation Course. Every phase was designed to make us quit, and many of my fellow trainees did just that. Even at selection, candidates would return from overnight land navigation exercises on the infamous STAR course and walk straight into the "quitters coral."I didn't make it through unscathed. I had to recover from a stress fracture in my pelvis, and a close call with heat stroke on my first disastrous attempt at the STAR course. I was determined that although I might fail, I would never quit. After passing selection, I requested and was awarded the two most challenging specialties, Special Forces Medic and Mandarin Chinese.
