I supported three beautiful young gents with various learning difficulties and disabilities to live independently in a house together. This is genuinely the job I would be still doing if the pay allowed me. I learnt an awful lot from courses and text books. I learnt infinitely more from just spending 24 hours a day assisting them as necessary. However, this job gave almost daily insights into yourself that gave it an extra dimension when it came to personal growth levels. I learnt more about myself in the first year of this job than at any other time in my life.

After having children I decided to spend more time at home. I started my own business to consult on all areas of construction that I had previously specialised in such as commercial energy assessments and BREEAM assessments. I also continued to add to my specialised knowledge by completing training in Code for Sustainable Homes and BRE BIM Level 2, again at the BRE in Watford. I began a relationship with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). This assisted in deepening my knowledge of building plant and hence energy consumption. I completed Virtual Environment Compliance Level 3 and 4 to enable me to begin modelling existing and proposed designs. This included thermal modelling, air flow modelling and air quality modelling, all areas I had recognised as a key focus of building regulations.

I managed the technical department, responsible for all design aspects such as CAD design and factory drawings along with structural and fabric design in line with or exceeding the expectations of the current regulations. Myself and a small team personally focused on the development of the product for the business, still in its early years of growth. I underwent huge amounts of training during this role, much at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Watford. This included Certified European Passivhaus Engineer training and certification as one of my primary goals was to drive energy consumption down and energy efficiency of both fabric and plant, up. I also became a commercial energy assessor in order to truly understand the workings of Part L2A of the building regulations.

It is almost impossible to describe the depth and variety of property and risk engineering that I was exposed to during my time in this role. 12 months intensive training split between classroom training at FM Globals' world renowned Field Engineering program in Boston, USA, and on-site training with my mentor all over Australia was completed before I began independent assessments and reporting. Every day was different, from simple office buildings to complex and vast industrial plants. I specialised in Telecoms and Energy distribution and I managed the Telstra visits at one time. Fire Engineering was a key part of the overall training program and assessment of fire protection systems a key part of the role.
