Born to a working-class Scottish family, a career in the arts was never presented to me as an option. It was and is seen as not for someone from my background.Despite this, art has always been home. Be that making, researching, writing or talking about it, art truly brings me to a place of peace and happiness. It’s a place I am always learning and falling in love with, over and over again. And it is a privilege that I get to engage with the thing I love every day – art.Yet, I was also brought up to believe that there is ‘a seat at the table for everyone’ and that you are no better than the person next to you. Values, I since found, the art world lacks completely. The artworld is steeped in a toxic competitive nature and is seen as a playground for the rich and well connected. Those ‘brought up in the club.’ I’ve found it difficult to find my voice, to feel like I fit into the mould. To find my path in the art world. Find my seat at THEIR table. But that was then, and this is now.I’m not your stereotypical art historian. I’m fun-loving, giggly and most importantly, love people. I want people NEVER to feel like an outcast in the art world. I’ve been there, it’s no good for anyone. I want to use my love and enthusiasm for art history to encourage a new wave of engagement and communication. Too long has the art world been seen as something for the few. Art is for all – and I am here to prove that.I want to do it all – write books on art. Present TV shows on art. Travel the world to experience and learn about new art. Work with leading galleries and museums to curate shows which excite and engage new audiences about art. Most importantly, I want to live my life the way I want to – surrounded by and forever talking about art. Please feel free to sit at my table. There is plenty of room for everyone, exactly as they are.

Jo's aim is to begin breaking down the elitism which surrounds the subject of art history and believes in order to do so, it is important to create a space where everyone from all walks of life have the opportunity to talk about art that is meaningful to them; as let’s face it, if you are passionate about something, you are going to be good at talking.
