The gut microbiome is affected by, and affects, all of these. This thesis found intake of microbiome-specific dietary components positively affected mental health and, although a 7-week cooking program increased cooking confidence and mental health, it did not change dietary and gut biomarkers associated with the gut-brain axis. Microbial-derived metabolites including bile acids correlated with diet-driven shifts in gut microbiome composition linked with poorer mental health. The diet-microbiome-mental health connection is still unfolding but diet quality presents a key modifiable risk factor in the protection of health. Show less -
