The composite films, based on natural polymers (chitosan and hyaluronic acid) and bioglass nanoparticles, could potentially find application as guided hard tissue regeneration membranes. 📌 To enhance adhesion, both polymers were functionalized with catechol groups following different optimized protocols. 📌 The produced bioglass nanoparticles provided a bioactive character - essential for the formation of new bone - as well as improved mechanical properties. 📌 The produced films (approx. 13 µm thick) displayed suitable mechanical properties, stability under physiological conditions, adhesive strength, bioactivity and exhibited no negative effects on cellular viability. 📌 In total, six film formulations were produced with 50 and 100 tetralayers (thickness between 5 to 55 µm) and thorough characterised – morphologically, topographically, mechanically, degradability, cell viability and proliferation.This was the first report on the production of thick (>1 µm) spin-coated natural-based freestanding films.
