Executive Producer, Bioscience And Health; Executive Producer, Going To War, $1.38 Million

Twin Cities Public Television

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

In 2012, JoAnna Baldwin Mallory came to National Productions at Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) as Executive Producer to launch the tpt Center of Excellence in Bioscience and Health. A first in public media, the Center responded to a transformative era in life science, in which 21st-century genetic research is unlocking the secrets of human health and disease. Building on tpt’s leadership as a national producer for the PBS system, and her own experience creating and financing new communications initiatives, the Center served as the branded PBS media hub for bioscience and health content, and expanded the PBS mission to new audiences and venues. During her tenure, Baldwin Mallory produced Going to War with Sebastian Junger and Karl Marlantes (https://youtu.be/WuliI6OJXZ8 and Amazon Prime). War is a horrific but strikingly persistent aspect of the human condition. But for soldiers throughout history, war is also the ultimate paradox. Combat experience is filled with fear, pain and grief. Yet at the same time, it can be exhilarating and meaningful, providing a profound sense of purpose and feelings of brotherhood—even love. Led by authors and on-camera guides Sebastian Junger and Karl Marlantes, Going to War is a prime-time PBS special premiering in 2018 that immerses audiences in the warrior’s experience in all its power and emotion. Slipping seamlessly from present to past, this gripping story captures the gritty mental and physical transformation of troops in training; thrusts viewers into the soldier’s direct experience of combat, delving deep into the psychologically complex world of warfare; and witnesses the soldier’s homecoming, intimately revealing the veterans’ quest to rejoin civilian society, revisit life goals and aspirations, and ultimately redefine themselves.
