About Joaquin Baca, Msph
I have worked to advance health equity for more than 15 years. I currently serve as the American Medical Association’s Director of MedEd Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. Previously, I served as AMA's Senior Health Equity Policy Analyst II. I also served as a Health Extension Regional Officer, the Director of Health Equity for the New Mexico Department of Health, Program Operations Director for the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office for Community Health, and Diversity Program Director for the UNM HSC Office for Diversity. In my work, I strive to model servant leadership and build strong, collaborative, respectful relationships with diverse communities. I bring to the table an ability to see the big picture, a willingness to listen to community priorities and to find mutually beneficial ways for our institutions to honor these, and a talent for leveraging resources by bridging the silos that are so much a part of the structure of many institutions. There have been several common “threads” running through my career: launching new initiatives, community building, organizational learning and change, education, social justice, health and health equity. The golden thread that ties them all together, that brings meaning to my work and my efforts is a belief in and adherence to my core values._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who profit by the preservation of the old institution and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one.” ~ Machiavelli_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Specialties: Health Equity | Public Health Policy | Organizational Development, Change, & Learning | Systems Thinking | Social & Structural Determinants of Health | Community Health | Cultural Humility | Strategic Planning | Partnership Development | Research & Evaluation | Instructional Design | Leading Change | Knowledge Sharing & Innovation | Learning Science
