About Jo Carter
Transforming services and empowering people are at the heart of what I do.As an Accredited Service Design Master (SDN) and founder of Service Works, I help organisations adopt user-centered approaches to improve their services. My expertise spans redesigning public services, coaching, training, and facilitation. I’ve trained 500+ professionals and facilitated workshops for 50+ organizations, driving meaningful change across government, social housing, and charities. What makes me unique?I combine two passions: service design and people development. I love seeing others grow beyond what they think is possible and designing services that transform lives. My warm facilitation style and activity-based learning ensure participants leave my sessions with practical skills they can apply immediately. How I deliver value:I lead service design training that inspires teams to tackle challenges collaboratively. For example, during Service Design in Practice, Laura Sims from St John Ambulance led discovery work that helped shape their youth programme strategy.I provide one-to-one coaching to help professionals adopt user-centered approaches. Recently, I coached Sarah Brown, a new user researcher at Natural Resources Wales, through nine sessions. Her manager shared: “It’s been massively beneficial, with learning that’s improved the team and our services for people.”I design bespoke training that embeds service design into everyday practice. A program for Audit Wales helped a team redesign their intranet, increasing engagement and reducing complaints.Achievements I’m proud of:>> Accredited as a Service Design Master by the global Service Design Network. https://www.service-design-network.org/accredited/jo-carter-19076>> Lead organiser of GovCamp Cymru, an annual unconference to reimagine public services in Wales. https://www.govcamp.cymru/>> Created a service design “mini-design cycle experience” which is free to download. https://www.weareserviceworks.com/resourcesOutside of work:I’m passionate about live music, health and fitness, and drumming with Cardiff’s community samba band Barracwda. Founder
In 2020, we re-branded and renamed Satori Lab in order to emphasise our focus on helping organisations to make their services work, through using design thinking tools and methods. We provide consultancy, training and facilitate workshops for clients. We help organisations to challenge the status quo, put customers first, and build services that work.No one plans a bad service. But designing good ones takes the right approach, skills and methods to keep the focus on your users and their needs. Design thinking gives you the mindset and tools you need to think differently and transform services for the 21st century. We help public and third sector organisations large and small across Wales and England to think differently and meet their customers’ needs.
C-Founder
I have expertise in workshop facilitation, training and consultancy in service design. While with Satori Lab, I have designed and facilitated workshops and learning and development programmes on innovation, service design and collaborative working, like 'Service Design in Practice' and an '8 step collaboration workshop' (see posts). I have spoken three times at Service Design in Government Conference and at the Delight Conference, Portland. I have conducted ethnographic research and facilitated customer journey mapping and persona workshops. In 2014 I founded the Cardiff Chapter of Urbanistas which is a women led network encouraging collaboration on projects and ideas. Together with my Co-Founder, I organised and co-facilitated GovCamp Cymru in September 2014 and 2015 - the first Government specific Unconference in Wales. I am a Fellow of the RSA, a mentor with One Million Mentors and chair of Keep Penylan Tidy.
Principal Valuer
Working as Principal Valuer, at the Council I lead a team of surveyors in the Estates department. I gained valuable experience in project management, service development, multi disciplinary team management, partnership working and successful project delivery. While at Monmouthshire I was lucky to participate in the Intrapreneurship School programme, which at the time blew my mind! It opened my eyes to new and improved ways of working - things like agile, innovation and design thinking. This experience completely changed my mindset - I became much more citizen focused. I put my new found skills immediately into practice and, in particular, helped local people in Caldicot to set up the first Town Team in Wales before leaving to set up Satori Lab.
Surveyor
I started life at HTC as a graduate surveyor, doing the rounds of the various departments in the company, moving from Property Management (looking after other people's multi-let buildings) to Professional Services (negotiating rent reviews, lease renewals and rating appeals and preparing valuation reports for bank lending etc). I ended up as an Investment Agent, buying and selling investment property for pension and other investment funds and people with a bit of money to splash around. This wasn't wholly fulfilling, so I left to go travelling for 12 months before seeking work in local government, where I wanted to use my skills to do social good as well as pay the bills.
