  • Bais Argentina
    Events & Marketing Intern
    Bais Argentina Jul 2017 - Dec 2017
    Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina
Six month internship at BAIS Argentina, the first non-governmental organization (NGO) that has the objective of providing support to help international students integrate into life overseas, whilst living in Buenos Aires. We did this by setting up weekly activities, trips and social events that provided an experience of Argentine culture and let fellow students to meet each other in a vibrant and exciting setting. Nearly all office work and discussions were conducted in Spanish, which greatly motivated my fluency in the language. Results included:• Acting as the organisation's main contact to UK and Ireland based universities, successfully connecting the organisation to respected institutions and encouraging them to add the organisation to their opportunities databases to help recruit interns for the following year. These universities included, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Queen’s University, Belfast.• I planned and executed social events for international students across Buenos Aires, liaising with venue owners and negotiating promotional offers. One of my most successful events was a boxing match viewing, which attracted over 200 students. The success of my event solidified an ongoing relationship between the organisation and the bar owner – securing a valuable venue that was used for several future projects during my internship.Duties included:• Utilising data collection software, social media platforms and writing blog posts in both Spanish and English to publicise the organisation, its events and boost their online popularity.• I translated trip itineraries, online publications, and video subtitles from Spanish to English.

Year-long placement in the Dominican Republic, working at Acción Callejera, an organisation whose objective is to promote the rights of children and young adults that live in conditions of social risk. About 60% of the the young people are Haitian, having arrived in the Dominican Republic after leaving difficult circumstances in their own country. The main centre works with boys as young as 8 years old and young men up to 18 years old who are either working, or working and sleeping, on the streets of Santiago. The organisation offers children and young adults access to legal help when required, education, as well as social programs that provide the children and young adults with a median to enjoy themselves, meet people and make friends, and engage in enriching activities such as sports, art and trips throughout the Dominican Republic. Results included:• I started an outreach project, signing up local women from an underprivileged neighbourhood in Santiago to weekly English classes taught by a colleague and I.• My work partner and I doubled the number of communities receiving English-language teaching from 3 to 6 locations across the city.• Thriving in a foreign setting, overcoming a cultural and linguistic barrier, and contributing to the amazing work conducted at the organisation was one of my greatest and most rewarding achievements.Duties included:• Conducting up to 3 classes a day taught in Spanish. The classes contained 15 – 30 pupils and took place up to 5 days a week at 6 different locations in the city of Santiago.• I worked in the NGO HQ as a personal mentor for 10 – 20 boys between the ages of 8 and 18 years old who were either homeless or living in conditions of social risk.
