In the last 10 years , I have investigated the influence of external corrosion scale affects of ILI MFL tools wall measurement/ corrosion detection accuracy. Heavy external corrosion scale with ferromagnetic properties have masked the predicted wall measurements of an ILI MFL. This type of external corrosion appears to be common in tape type coatings, shrink wraps, and atmospheric environments. If the steel cannot break down into solution and return to earth during the oxidation process it does not loose its magnetic properties. Tape wraps and shrink wraps retains / holds the corrosion scale so the steel may be in a different state yet it does not leave the pipe surface. MFL tools in some cases identified that the pipe wall thickness actually grew more metal. In these cases the overall dimensions, length and width changed which flagged these corrosion anomalies for further investigation. CP levels may appear to be acceptable in locations like this which brings up more of a reason to investigate further.
