Joe Sullivan, Eit Email and Phone Number
As a non-traditional student, I had the opportunity to take some time away from school and gain hands-on experience with the application of heavy machinery and process equipment. I have completed a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from CU Boulder and have been drawn to electrochemistry through my lab work while at school as well as chemical plant design and manufacturing. Competing in an SAE International Baja competition for my Mechanical Engineering capstone project built my engineering intuition and provided valuable experience with design for manufacture. Outside of engineering, I enjoy getting outdoors with my dogs, working on my various hobbies, hanging out with friends and listening to music.

Project Manager For Chevron Capstone ProjectUniversity Of Colorado Boulder Jan 2024 - May 2024Facilitated communication between the team and Chevron liaisons and ensured project goals were met. Applied process refinement by utilizing Aspen HYSYS to simulate the proposed retrofit from gasoline production to jet fuel including complex recycle streams and over 20 major unit ops. Calculated material and energy balances for 33 species and ensured unity between the simulation and balances of less than half a percent while obtaining production of approximately 10,000 barrels per day, increasing Chevron’s market share and revenue across global fuel markets. -
Independent Study With Dr. HolewinskiUniversity Of Colorado Boulder Jan 2024 - May 2024Secured independent study in a subject area that CU did not offer any courses on. Applied and solidified self-taught knowledge of electrochemical systems while contributing to the lab team. Developed and performed a set of experiments to test the durability of a particular catalyst. Performed cyclic voltammetry and electrolysis experiments, collecting and analyzing data studying the electro-catalytic oxidation of furfural following a set SOP involving highly reactive and environmentally sensitive compounds. -
MachinistUniversity Of Colorado Boulder Sep 2023 - May 2024Instructed undergrad and graduate students to safely and effectively machine custom components using 3-axis mills, lathes and water jet machines. Designed and executed CNC programming for 3-axis CNC mills and reviewed drawings. -
Welding InstructorUniversity Of Colorado Boulder Sep 2023 - May 2024Instructed undergrad and graduate students on the principles of MIG welding as applied to engineering and manufacturing and facilitated the learning of the advantages and limitations of welding. -
Production TechnicianThe J.M. Smucker Co. Jan 2023 - Mar 2023Maintained production equipment and ensured quality control while practicing good manufacturing practices in a high-volume food production environment and adhering to FDA food production requirements. -
Logistics Manager And Drivetrain Lead For Sae International Baja Capstone ProjectUniversity Of Colorado Boulder Aug 2021 - May 2022Designed, built, and tested a 3:1 bevel gearbox that was the centerpiece of the four-wheel drive system. Utilized SolidWorks, Design-for-Manufacture, drawing reviews, and FEA to facilitate smooth production with bearing fit tolerances of half a thousandth of an inch. A final redesign informed by precise test planning and failure analysis implementation led the gearbox to surpass its design limits and was retired at twice its expected lifetime. -
Cdl A Truck DriverNevarez Trucking May 2013 - Jun 2020Responsible for gross vehicle weights of up to 100 tons, hauled heavy construction equipment and maintained a safe work environment under stressful dynamic situations in a high-pressure self-paced environment.
