I teach public affairs reporting, editing for digital and print, cultural competence and professional branding. We publish hyperlocal websites and brought a book on bullying to market in print and digital formats in 101 days. That led to a series called Bias Busters about increasing cultural competence. It now has about 20 titles. I am also involved in helping us bring talented high school students into the school and am the founding adviser to the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, a national chapter of the year.Created courses in editing, a professional branding course that uses badges as incentives and one that publishes a series of cultural competence guides. The Bias Busters series had 20 guides by 2023. In the public affairs journalism course, students build news sites for the communities around East Lansing. One, which focused on schools of choice and used geographical data, was honored by the Online News Association. The class also developed the Fair Chance Reporting method, which uses data visualizations to help journalists detect gaps between community makeup and our coverage of them.In 2015, I lectured at Saint Petersburg State University and Arkhangelsk University as a guest of the U.S. Consulate in Russia. I lectured in Pskov, Russia, for a week in 2017. In 2013-14, I taught communication and message development to Saudi Aramco professionals in Saudi Arabia and online. One of the developers of a Coursera sequence in journalism, developed in 2015-2016.

I am lucky enough to teach reporting, writing and ethics to high school students from the United States and abroad in Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism's month-long residency.

At various points wrote five-day-a-week Ask the Recruiter blog, organized twice-monthly web chats (first in Cover It Live and then Scribble Live) with industry thought leaders and appeared in webinars. The blog was called Ask the Recruiter and began in September 2003 as a daily spinoff blog from my Jobspage.com website, launched in 1997 The website also spun off two books, "Breaking In" and "Ask the Recruiter."

I blogged about careers and diversity in journalism. Also helped with some Diversity Institute workshops (American Indian Journalism Institute, UNITY) and helped recruit students for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Scholarships

I covered "the web of things" and other news developments including RFID technology, a virtual choir, medical devices, NIXLE and statSheet, a writing program positioned as part of an automated Journalism 2.0.

Helped AOL's Patch exceed its goal for startup sites. I focused on Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, helped with the Pacific Northwest. Also edited sites.

I worked with 11 marvelous high school journalists who helped with Time, Inc.'s Assignment Detroit, providing youthful and diverse perspectives for TIME.com.

I worked with Indigenous contributors, edited copy, updated the site, processed photos, wrote headlines and optimized content for this website that gave Native American student journalists a platform for their work. Native American Journalists Association ally and life member.

During the school year, I wrote one teacher's guide per month for this publication, which helped students use the Wall Street Journal in their classrooms.

Developed and taught the course in media editing. Previously taught copy editing, newswriting, editorial writing and photojournalism.

As the newsroom recruiter, I coordinated hiring and staff development for a newsroom staff of 300 through a 21-month strike, the move into our competitor’s building, the rise of online and the middle-of-the-night ownership swap from Knight Ridder to Gannett. Worked on both companies’ corporate recruiting teams.• Helped the Free Press achieve staff diversity of 31 percent, highest among the nation’s 20 largest newspapers.• Organized 16 job fairs from 1991 to 2008 and helped the Online News Association with fairs for 2008 and 2009.• From 1991 through 2008, I recruited at 57 of 60 NABJ, AAJA, NAHJ, NAJA and UNITY conventions, more than any other newspaper recruiter in the country.• Produced 100 Questions and Answers About Arab Americans in 1999. I posted it early on Sept. 12, 2001, it had runaway traffic and was named the educational site of the week. More than 30,000 hard copies distributed.• In 1997, launched the JobsPage, a journalism careers site. I reverse published it as a book (my fifth) in 2007.• Created Ask the Recruiter blog in 2003. In 2006, it became the featured element of Poynter Online’s Career Center. Traffic for May 2007 reached 200,000 views.• Pinch hit as web editor, news editor and copy editor.• Led staff training in harassment prevention, personnel selection, evaluations, conflict resolution, diversity.

Helped coordinate convention recruiting and ongoing talent selection and networking for national news media company.

In my first experience with distance learning, I taught editing on the FirstClass online-learning platform. Participants were editors in U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia. I have since taught with Coursera, Blackboard, Angel and D2L.

Promoted to a new job about every 9 months. Part of the leadership team that launched a rarity, a new Sunday paper against the Detroit dailies and switched the paper to morning circulation. Helped convert the newsroom to computers.
