About Joe Grimm
I have invested 48 rewarding years of full-time work in recruiting and developing people in classrooms and some of the largest newsrooms in the country. With the guiding principle that diverse perspectives make the best content, I focus on careers. I am a relational recruiter whose passion is helping people learn and grow. I have been teaching in classrooms since the 1970s and online since the 1990s. I joined the Michigan State University School of Journalism in 2008.Demanding, fulfilling challenges make us do our best. Today, my major teaching focus is the multimedia books my students publish. We have sold more than 20,000 "Bias Busters," as we call them, under 21 titles. Recently we have focused several on faith and how it unites and divides the country. You can find the series on Amazon. The latest, to be released in June 2024 is "100 Questions and Answers About the Hmong Americans: Secret No More.” It will mark the 50th anniversary of the evacuation of Hmong people to the United States from the CIA’s Secret War in Southeast Asia. Every project and program I organize or work on, from books to panel discussions, has a diverse team.Passions: Recruiting, staff development, diversity, DEI, networking, social media marketing, professional branding, book publishing, coaching and trying to be a better listener.

Visiting Editor In Residence
CurrentI teach public affairs reporting, editing for digital and print, cultural competence and professional branding. We publish hyperlocal websites and brought a book on bullying to market in print and digital formats in 101 days. That led to a series called Bias Busters about increasing cultural competence. It now has about 20 titles. I am also involved in helping us bring talented high school students into the school and am the founding adviser to the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, a national chapter of the year.Created courses in editing, a professional branding course that uses badges as incentives and one that publishes a series of cultural competence guides. The Bias Busters series had 20 guides by 2023. In the public affairs journalism course, students build news sites for the communities around East Lansing. One, which focused on schools of choice and used geographical data, was honored by the Online News Association. The class also developed the Fair Chance Reporting method, which uses data visualizations to help journalists detect gaps between community makeup and our coverage of them.In 2015, I lectured at Saint Petersburg State University and Arkhangelsk University as a guest of the U.S. Consulate in Russia. I lectured in Pskov, Russia, for a week in 2017. In 2013-14, I taught communication and message development to Saudi Aramco professionals in Saudi Arabia and online. One of the developers of a Coursera sequence in journalism, developed in 2015-2016.

More than 30,000 hard copies distributed.• In 1997, launched the JobsPage, a journalism careers site. I reverse published it as a book (my fifth) in 2007.• Created Ask the Recruiter blog in 2003. In 2006, it became the featured element of Poynter Online’s Career Center. Traffic for May 2007 reached 200,000 views.• Pinch hit as web editor, news editor and copy editor.• Led staff training in harassment prevention, personnel selection, evaluations, conflict resolution, diversity.
