The Standoff Hazardous Agent Detection and Evaluation System (SHADES) was an R&D Program under the administration of the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command focused on the development of a prototype vapor phase sampling system capable of detecting compounds related to Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), commercial explosives, and chemical weapons. A key element of the project was the creation of algorithms capable of deconvoluting and distinguishing target compounds from background noise in mass spectra. I acted as the chief architect for all aspects of software solution which included system control, data analysis, and UI. I was also the primary developer of system/process control, integration, and support portions of the software solution. Lead five person development team (3 focused on algorithm development for data analysis and one additional UI/infrastructure developer).In addition to my duties as software engineer, I was an integral member of team responsible for hardware development, integration, and support. I was a driving force behind many prototype design refinements to add or improve functionality of system operation as well as control and monitoring based on research and experimentation. I was principal person responsible for hardware and software integration of final prototype components.

Lead a project to transition department development and instruction environment to open-source tools (selected, packaged, and deployed the new development environment consisting of customized Eclipse distribution with open-source compilers on MacOS, Windows, and Linux platforms). I worked with faculty to update course material for laboratory sections by revising existing content and authoring new lessons to introduce GUI development using GTK+ on Windows. I participated in research related to natural language database query, deep web searching, and bioinformatics. I was a named author on “A Relational Approach for Pathway Analysis” published in the 2008 Symposium of Computations in Bioinformatics and Biosciences. I also served as instructor for Programming I Lab.
