As a person in recovery, it has been a source of pride to find a career where I can be of maximum service to those who need it the most. Working with St. Anthony's Foundation, I have been fortunate enough to collaborate on researching, creating, and leading classes for men in early recovery who are about to re-enter the workforce. We present them with an A-B-C plan. A, get a job any job. B, get a better job. C, get a career.Before we start the traditional workforce navigation process of writing a cover letter and crafting a resume, we first ask the men to define their values. We know from all the research that anyone who can activate their personal values at a job tends to thrive emotionally and stand out at any company. In essence, we work on the tools that will help them keep a job, identify their next best moves, and find a field they are interested in. My work is rewarding, always different, and essential to building more empathetic communities.
