I am deeply fascinated by the everchanging landscape in the marketplace. From my time at Washington State University, I found that marketing and finance were areas that revolved around my personal interests in the business world. My university experience has allowed me to excel in the technical and soft skills associated with each field in the business world.Working within a group of five, my team and I began working with a small business in the local Portland area. Our client provided us with their financial records and had several requests for our team to address, such as getting a return on investment of 40%. My team along with our mentor constructed a presentation that included our target audience, a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis of our client, and recommendations for our client’s current business strategy obtained through primary and secondary research. In the end our client was very pleased with our findings and informed us that her team would be utilizing our ideas in the start of 2019. Through this experience I gained insight in how a marketing team would work in a real-world environment. Along with my interest in marketing, I started to dive into the world of finance. What drew me towards finance was that this field revolved more around analysis and management. With my finance courses I grew more interested into doing valuations of a company and understanding a company’s management of its assets. My investment analysis course really absorbed me into constructing stock pitches and performing discounted cash flow (DCF) valuations on a company. I have completed numerous case studies that required me to analyze and interpret a company’s financial statements and provide recommendations that aimed at bringing potential value creation. By obtaining these technical skills in finance and marketing, I then enrolled in a management course in the summer that included a simulation of a new growing business. During the simulation, I oversaw making decisions in the company’s production, marketing, and financial departments for the next 5 to 10 years while simultaneously dealing with changing events occurring in the marketplace. My results included the company having lower costs, increased market share, increased productivity, and a profit.
