Professionally, I have decades of experience in building teams and growing businesses across a wide range of industries from manufacturing to customer service and retail.As I grow older I have opted for something less stressful with more free time and was throughly enjoying this change.Then the Bristol VA landfill came along.Early on it became apparent that the fugitive emissions emanating from this landfill were a serious threat to the health, well-being and safety of our beloved community.Many hours of background discussion resulted in the decision to form HOPE for Bristol (Healing Our Polluted Environment), incorporate and, finally, achieve 501c3 status.Our role is not something we relish. However, it was and remains a crucial and critical part of this community. We have done and continue to do the hard work, the work no other local organization would do. We are unique as we are, essentially, your neighbors. We are all volunteer and unpaid. We work to ensure our neighbors and neighborhoods have a voice in the remediation of this environmental disaster.To date we have played a large role toward remediation.As HOPE for Bristol moves closer to a "watchdog" role as far as the landfill goes, we look to move forward to affect further change in our community. We are getting closer to being able to do the "fun stuff" that can bring growth and change for our neighbors.We are also considering building a national organization that ties together small, grassroots organizations across the country with the goal of affecting change in federal law that puts actual clean air protections in place for all.
