Joel was raised in Anniston, Alabama, where he devoted summers and holidays of his youth and college years to learning the home building business with his father, a third generation home builder. Joel took a one year sabbatical from his Architecture studies between his third and fourth years, allowing him to achieve his goal of intensly focusing on learning the trade and honing the skills he had developed since his youth for one uninterrupted year before finishing college. In this position, Joel was tasked with utilizing his prior construction experience and Architectural education to document, via field measurements and photographs, the architectural, structural, and dimensional characteristics of several abandoned but historic buildings in Calhoun and Talladega… Show more As a post-third year Architecture student, Joel worked for one summer as an Intern Architect for the firm of Julian W. Jenkins, AIA, Architect & Associates (now Jenkins Munroe Jenkins Architecture). In this position, Joel was tasked with utilizing his prior construction experience and Architectural education to document, via field measurements and photographs, the architectural, structural, and dimensional characteristics of several abandoned but historic buildings in Calhoun and Talladega Counties that had potential for redevelopment. Joel then worked with the staff draftsman to create drawings of the existing conditions of these buildings, which have subsequently been used, in some instances, for the rehabilitation and renovation of the historic buildings, such as the conversion of one railroad freight station into the offices of Jenkins Munroe Jenkins Architecture and a cafe/meeting hall.
