As a life-long technologist, I have always tried to stay on the "bleeding edge" of technology, both in my professional and personal life. Professionally, whether that was deploying and supporting Hosted Exchange SaaS in the early 2000's, running POCs for Hybrid Cloud in the 2010's or investigating Cloud Security Posture at scale in the 2020's, there have always been common themes - a large, sensitive user base, business criticality and working without a net. This has bred a security-first approach, with strong understanding of the impacts of my actions. These in turn inform design and change decisions to ensure a mindful approach to any given situation. My strengths lie in my desire to solve problems with technology. I'd rather learn a new thing, a new approach, than settle for less than the result I wanted. Over the course my career, this has led to surprisingly deep dives into a number of unexpected areas - but gaining these new skills and experiences is what drives me. A side-effect of this approach is that I have learned to communicate clearly and naturally at all levels from the boardroom to the shop floor - Because of the niche nature of a lot of the technologies I have worked with, I have frequently found myself presenting to, documenting for and even training people at every skill level - But at the same time, I know when I am not the expert in the room, too.Key experience:Microsoft Windows Server, particularly 2003,08,12 in production settings and at scale. Some production experience with 2016, too.Exchange/Office 365/Productivity - Extensive experience in this area, particularly around migration, adoption and security.Virtualisation - I have worked extensively with VMWare in large-scale (1000+ VM) multi-homed environments. I have also deployed several small Hyper-V clusters and maintain a personal lab running Proxmox (KVM)Storage/SAN - A subject I am passionate about. I've worked with NetApp, SolidFire, Dell/EMC, HP and various opensource products.MS SQL - Not as a DBA, rather a Sysadmin, I have built, maintained and supported standalone and clustered SQL services incorporating SQL versions 2000 through 2016.Firewalls - Full solution implementation from proposal through to design and support of enterprise level devices such as Fortigate.On-premise IT - "The cloud" hasn't been around for most of my working life, so on premise and traditional datacentre is where I built my career. Unix-like OSes - Whilst I wouldn't market myself as an expert in this area, I am almost as comfortable working with these technologies as Microsoft/others.

Multi-Discipline Solutions ArchitectCloudessence May 2020 - PresentUnited KingdomFreelance consultant/engineer, turning my experience into tangible business outcomes. Some specific outcomes:> Overhaul and re-write of information security policy for small investment bank, facilitating their accreditations to several industry standards and making the document more accessible to the relevant staff.> Various Powershell scripts used in a large VDI environment facilitating a reduction in helpdesk tickets pertaining to user administration and giving greater visibility of system health, further reducing support contact volume.> Planned/defined ISO 27001 deployment for a medium-sized business – Whilst I was able to give the business insight into what they would need to do to gain accreditation through analysing existing systems and processes and documenting the changes necessary, ultimately the client opted to postpone the work due to the scale of change required.> Assessment/validation of Cloud Security Posture management software for large multinational, utilising all three of the main PCI providers. This required taking three different products through a fifty point functional POC and constructing a scoring matrix. Once each product was assessed and scored, I presented the results back to the business and ultimately, they selected the product I recommended to secure their global estate.> Hosted Exchange End Of Life Project for UK MSP – Operating as a migration specialist, I was tasked with facilitating the outbound migrations of approximately 3000 mailboxes, spread over around 800 individual companies. I was the single point of contact for this entire customer base and any questions they may have about migrating away, including, when necessary, the provision of third party service and full mail migration. My wealth of messaging experience allowed me to ensure a successful outcome in an overwhelming majority of cases, working alone, saving immeasurable volumes of helpdesk contact and ensuring a smooth exit for a large volume of customers. -
Hosting Solutions SpecialistKcom Group Plc Jan 2014 - Apr 2020Brighton, United KingdomFunctioning as Pre-Sales design authority, my primary role was to work with the sales team and customer to understand business needs and then design cost-effective solutions for delivery. Once any given design was sold, I would then create documentation to allow deployment teams to build and deliver it. A key part of the role was to be the owner of the end to end solution delivery, co-ordinating the delivery workflow and offering technical input to ensure successful outcomes. Some highlights include:> Planned, documented and enacted the migration of a highly-available, popular e-commerce website from traditional managed hosting into a new hybrid cloud environment with zero downtime. This significantly reduced their TCO as well as granting them the “burstability” they had been previously lacking, so resolving a recurrent challenge they faced during peak periods. Improvements to general monitoring also allowed the business key insights into their environment and traffic patterns.> Operated the Hybrid Cloud trialist programme. In this function, after delivering a product tour, I would operate as the single point of contact for a given trialist of the Hybrid Cloud product, managing the relationship as well as handling any technical queries for the duration. The programme realised several trials into significant recurring revenue over several years.> Legacy environment modernisation for major UK courier. When taking up the position, I inherited responsibility for a significant legacy private cloud infrastructure. Over the course of my tenure, I worked with the customer extensively to both reduce the footprint of the environment and double capacity, through increased compute density. In addition, my development of the environment reduced TCO by almost 50% by improving licensing efficiency and building a new pricing model, as well as the reduced footprint. -
Windows Hosted Messaging And Collaboration Systems EngineerKcom Nov 2006 - Nov 2013Day-to-day duties included supporting, maintaining and developing the 2500+ user Hosted Exchange platform and infrastructure. When I was not maintaining the various hosted platforms, I acted as a technical point of escalation for several other areas of the business. I also assisted in the design and build of complex customer solutions, with a speciality in clustering and Exchange. Some highlights include:> One of my first tasks was to understand and document the recently acquired Exchange platform and its components. I then developed all the support documentation, process and procedures for helpdesk operatives as well as copious technical documentation for other administrators and stakeholders. Ultimately allowing the business to fully productise the platform.> Virtualisation, consolidation and upgrade of legacy shared web hosting farm, hugely reducing TCO, resolving numerous reliability, security and performance challenges and increasing the product's overall value by adding modern features.> Hosted Exchange platform modernisation. Once I had afforded the business a full understanding of the platform they had acquired, I was tasked with the design, build and documentation of a new environment. This was done according to best practice as defined by Microsoft at the time and resulted in a robust, resilient and performant platform which was easier to administer and provision against and went on to support several thousand users over several years, generating significant additional recurring revenues whilst also addressing the challenges of the legacy platform. > Ground up re-design and deployment of core ticketing and provisioning environment. Another exercise in reducing sprawl, cost of ownership and recurrent challenges by replacing organically grown, legacy ecosystems with purpose designed, best practice adherent architecture. The outcome was an overall more productive workforce as constant challenges with this environment affected the majority of staff. -
