This was an extremely busy job offering clerical support to a 24 hour emergency service for elderly and disabled people across the whole of Edinburgh. I have also worked as a legal searcher with SPH Douglas and Company. In that post (and my current one) I have developed strong and accurate research skills creating reports for the legal profession which have to be delivered in a very short timescale. I am a political activist (I have stood as a candidate twice for local elections) and I created and maintained a website focused on Scottish independence (The Scottish Independence Guide) which was ranked number one on Google and attracted a lot of international interest. I contributed a chapter to the book 'Is There a Scottish Road to Socialism' edited by Gregor Gall. I have studied creative writing through the Open University passing two online courses including A215 Creative Writing. I have written a number of speculative SF essays and short stories which have been published online. These included the mock news article 'James Dean cloned by Warners' which was referenced in the academic book 'James Dean transfigured - the many faces of rebel iconography' written by Claudia Springer. Some years ago I was the Press Officer for the campaign Independence First [I was also IF's representative to the Independence Convention] which lobbied the Scottish and Westminster parliaments for a referendum on independence and organised two successful marches and rallies in Edinburgh. I am a keen chess player and play online on Chessworld www.chessworld.net the international chess site since 2003, look me up JoeMiddleton for a game if you play! I played chess for Sandy Bells club in Edinburgh. I am currently a member of the human rights organisation Liberty, the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Celtic League which shares political/cultural experience among the Celtic countries. I have written a number of political articles for their newsletter Carn and various other publications such as the Scottish Left Review.

These reports were required urgently by our solicitor clients as part of conveyancing transactions. I was also involved in roof burden reports, finding copies of deeds and other ownership enquiries. In my joint role as Training Officer I was part of the management team, I trained other staff in their duties and ensured good practice across the company. I was also in overall charge of the office at times if the manager and deputy manager were unavailable. At SPH we all worked together to provide very strong and effective customer service for our clients. I also created a searching manual which had clear step by step instructions for every task. I enjoyed working in this field and was disappointed to be laid off after the company was taken over by a rival firm.
