Conducted research and development programs on toughened discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA) materials. Made noteworthy contributions toward understanding the properties and fracture micro-mechanisms of Al/DRA laminate constructions for potential use in aerospace structural applications. Developed models to optimize materials design.

Directed research into understanding fundamental mechanisms of stable cleavage crack growth, and brittle-ductile transition in semi-brittle single crystalline materials (MgO, W and Mo). Designed and manufactured all aspects of special test equipment to enable acquisition of acoustic emission signals while quantifying fracture toughness and discrete stable cracking events over a range of temperatures and strain rates. Modified fundamental models / computer simulations based on experimental results.
