Joanna Foat is a passionate storyteller, nature lover and historian who brought the forgotten story of the Lumberjills to life. While working for the Forestry Commission in 2012, she uncovered the untold legacy of thousands of young women who felled trees for the British war effort during WW2. Her extensive research, involving interviews with sixty original Lumberjills, culminated in her acclaimed book Lumberjills: Britain’s Forgotten Army, published by The History Press in 2019.In 2022, Joanna released her debut novel, The Lumberjills: Stronger Together, marking the 80th anniversary of the Women’s Timber Corps and launched on Remembrance Sunday. Her work has been widely featured in prominent media outlets, including The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Dan Snow’s History Hit Podcast, Countryfile, BBC2’s How We Won The War, and many more.In 2023, Joanna co-curated and authored the narrative for The Lumberjills Story Exhibition for Forestry England, which debuted at Grizedale Forest and continues to inspire audiences as it tours, showing at Dalby Forest in 2024. She is soon to launch a Lumberjills photo book and her second Lumberjills novel in the series.A sought-after speaker, Joanna shares her insights and stories across the UK, captivating audiences with her knowledge and enthusiasm for storytelling about forgotten women from history. Alongside her writing and speaking engagements, she works as a communications consultant for The Wildlife Trusts and is currently editor of the national membership magazine content.
