Additionally, I spearhead efforts to benchmark ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategies and practices, aligning them with Sasol's short, medium, and long-term sustainability objectives.In essence, I serve as a critical link in ensuring that the ESG metrics adopted by the Group accurately portray Sasol as a sustainable investment. Through meticulous analysis and strategic guidance, I contribute to enhancing Sasol's position as a leader in sustainable business practices, thereby fostering long-term value creation and stakeholder trust.

In this business role, I spearheaded various critical projects, notably the development of the Sasolburg greenhouse gas roadmap aimed at achieving a minimum 10% reduction in emissions. This endeavor involved conducting a comprehensive renewable energy resource assessment specific to the Sasolburg region. Subsequently, I translated these findings into actionable engineering solutions, driving forward the company's sustainability objectives.Additionally, I led assessments on several projects integral to the roadmap's implementation, including the design and implementation of a steam trap management system for Sasolburg Operations (SO). Furthermore, I oversaw the integration of variable speed drives into Sasolburg's cooling towers, enhancing energy efficiency, and explored opportunities for small-scale solar rooftop projects to further bolster our renewable energy portfolio.Part of my role within Sasolburg Operations included a 12-month assignment at the Sasol PVC plant in a senior plant support capacity until February 2020. During this period, I was responsible for daily production monitoring and troubleshooting, playing a key role in developing plant performance monitoring tools such as the PI dashboard. I actively contributed to projects essential for the successful execution of the 2019 Shutdown and managed shutdown activities within the PVC sections.Moreover, I took charge of plant downtime monitoring and optimization efforts, collaborating closely with the plant licensor, INEOS, to address operational challenges promptly and efficiently. Additionally, I led safety incident investigations and conducted weekly plant safety inspections, underscoring my commitment to fostering a culture of safety and operational excellence.

Among these initiatives were the AnMBR commercialization project, the Sasol One Environmental Roadmap, and the Sasol 2050 Strategy Task Team, each contributing significantly to Sasol's sustainability and operational excellence.Sasol One Environmental Task Team:In the Sasol One Environmental Roadmap project, my accountability was primarily on the air theme, I spearheaded efforts to craft strategies for boiler abatement, incineration, and other air emissions. Collaborating closely with key stakeholders such as Group SHE, Legal, and Planning and Optimization, I conducted thorough gap analyses against emissions limits and compliance deadlines. This endeavor facilitated crucial interactions across various Sasol entities, ensuring alignment and synergy in our environmental strategy.SA 2050 Task Team:Within the SA 2050 Task Team, I played a pivotal role in assessing the long-term sustainability of Sasol's South African operations amidst evolving scenarios. As the lead for the GHG and environmental theme, I conducted in-depth studies on the impacts of various factors, including feedstock availability, compliance programs, and GHG emissions. This involved extensive collaboration with key internal stakeholders such as Group Strategy, SHE, and Operations Management Entities (OMEs), as well as external partners like the CSIR. Notably, I spearheaded renewable energy assessment studies in collaboration with the CSIR, culminating in a comprehensive feasibility study for a 1.5GW renewable energy project in Secunda. These findings were instrumental in shaping Sasol's future strategy, guiding decisions to reduce our carbon footprint by 10% by 2030 and initiating a 600 MW renewable energy deployment process currently underway.

Within the development group at Sasol, my primary focus revolved around exploring future technologies and optimizing their integration within Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) and Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) flow sheets. Serving as a utility engineer on GTL projects, I played a pivotal role in managing GTL utility models and conducting comprehensive studies to optimize various aspects of the process.This role included comparing water cooling versus air cooling systems for different geographical locations, ensuring efficiency across diverse environments. Additionally, I led main process drive configuration studies for critical components such as Air Separation Units (ASUs) and Fischer-Tropsch reactors, evaluating the feasibility of different drive options including S/H steam, electric, and saturated steam drives.As part of the GTL Task Team, tasked with enhancing Sasol's GTL offerings to meet internal financial targets, I contributed extensively to optimizing the GTL flow sheet. This involved conducting utility studies encompassing process drive configurations, gas turbine utilization for steam superheating, power-neutral and power-export scenarios, as well as evaluating air-cooled versus water-cooled configurations and designing water systems for Zero Liquid Effluent Discharge (ZLED) and discharge.My responsibilities extended to the design of utility and offsite sections, encompassing tasks such as generating mass balances, preparing detailed data sheets for cost estimation, optimizing plot plans, and conducting economic evaluations for all proposed options. As a Process Design Engineer within the Process Design Utility group, I undertook diverse projects aimed at enhancing utility systems and addressing critical process challenges.One significant project involved the Sasolburg utility expansion program, where I served as the lead engineer for the evaporation crystallizer plant for the demineralized water plant effluent. Later, I assumed the role of the evaporative crystallizer lead in Project WaTER (Waste Treatment and Effluent Recycle). Project WaTER focused on treating ash transport water to achieve demineralized water quality. Collaborating with Richard Paxton and Associates, as well as Royal Haskoning as contractors, we developed innovative solutions to achieve project objectives efficiently and effectively.Additionally, I provided support to the Secunda facility on the Gas Turbine Heat Recovery Steam Generator (GT HRSG) project. Specifically, I addressed boiler feed water issues encountered post-start-up, leveraging my expertise to troubleshoot and resolve operational challenges promptly.In both roles, my contributions were instrumental in optimizing processes, enhancing system reliability, and ensuring compliance with quality standards, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the projects.
