Graduating from Temple University in 1980 with a Masters in Operations Research my first job was with a defense contractor (FMC Inc.) in Minneapolis. After a few years there I moved to Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals (now part of Novartis) in the mid-1980s, initially doing a lot of work in support of the new Drug Development process. Over time I got more involved in the company’s production and supply chain areas where I became very involved in Monte Carlo simulation for the purposes of helping to optimize the material flow and layout of a facility that was then under renovation.Since moving over to Profit Point, I’ve been consulting with client companies in order to improve their Supply Chain’s performance. I’ve built software tools that real schedulers use in their day-in/day-out jobs to run their plants in an optimal way. I’ve really enjoyed this aspect of the work because these are the folks who are responsible for meeting orders with a realistic and practical schedule that the people on the floor can accept and work with. These schedulers, as the saying goes, “make the trains run on time”.I think that what I find most rewarding is when I’m able to build something that is sophisticated and challenging from a modeling/Operations Research point of view, but still wrap it in a delivery vehicle that a user can understand, use easily, and get actionable outputs from.
