In 2022, I retired after 50 years at South Mountain Company (SMCo), the firm I founded when I was 24. I’m now President Emeritus, work a bit in a consulting role, and remain on the Board of Directors. SMCo is a 40-person worker co-op and B-Corp that provides integrated architecture, building, and renewable energy services. With my partner Kim Angell, I recently founded Abrams+Angell. We consult with triple-bottom-line businesses to help with succession planning, worker co-op conversions, financial literacy, leadership development, and business effectiveness.I’m currently working on a new book with Berrett-Koehler Publishers with the working title of Founder to Future: New Strategies for Business Impact, Equity, and Succession. It will provide knowledge, strategies, and tools to help business owners, leaders, and advisors to successfully accomplish four transitions:▪ From original founder to next-generation leadership▪ From sole proprietorships and partnerships to widely shared ownership▪ From hierarchical control to participatory democratic management▪ From unprotected mission to perpetually preserved purposeI have been a passionate affordable housing advocate for 45 years and was the co-founder and serve as a facilitator of Building Energy Bottom Lines, a peer group network of 60 Northeast triple-bottom-line businesses in the design and construction industry.In 2004-5, I took two six-month sabbaticals from SMCo to write The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community, and Place.
