John Aitken is an experienced communications engineer with a strong broadcasting, EMC and railway communications background. He has been involved in the many of the railway radio communication systems that have been implemented in Australia in the last thirty years.John is active in the railway industry and has been chairman of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers, Australasia (irse.org.au) for two terms: 2008 - 2010. He has been a director and member of the Council of the UK based Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (irse.org) between 2009 and 2011. John was a member of the organising committee for the 2011 International Railway Safety Conference and developed the web site for that conference. He is currently the Chair of the NSW Chapter of the IEEE EMC Society and Secretary of the iESM Working Group.His commitment to training in the railway industry led him to becoming the principal author of the Central Queensland University railway telecommunications course (CPD7 within the Graduate Diploma in Railway Signalling andTelecommunications). John has been the course tutor for that subject and has obtained formal training qualifications through the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. At present he is Engineering Manager, Trainer and Assessor for Competency Australia.John’s current interests are in electromagnetic compatibility and overall communication system engineering for railways, seeking to take a holistic approach to the communications requirements of the railway. This interest has developed from a study of railway accidents in which communications (or the lack of communication) has played a part. He is the author of Australian Standard AS7660: Rail Network Control Mobile Communication Systems Standard.Broad experience in communication systems, EMC and the railway environment have provided skills that John applies as an Expert Witness, as well as in his consulting and training activities.
