John's research on which he has published widely in leading international journals, focuses on strategic management in the public sector, contracting and partnering, public managers’ political astuteness, wicked problems, and client-organisation relationships. His most recent book, co-authored with Janine O’Flynn, is Rethinking Public Service Delivery: Managing with External Providers (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) has recently won the Academy of Management Public-NonProfit division Best Book Award 2014. His previous book, Engaging Public Sector Clients: From Service-Delivery to Co-Production (Palgrave Macmillan) won the American Society for Public Administration’s Award for the Best Public Administration Book in 2011.John’s article ‘Towards a new public management model: Beyond “managerialism” and its critics’ (Australian Journal of Public Administration, vol. 52, no. 2, June 1993) was the winner of the IPAA prize for ‘the most important or most influential article’ published in the journal. He has also written or supervised over 80 teaching cases set in government organisations.
