As a fundraiser, across my career I've raised close to $200,000,000 from over 100 foundations and government agencies for projects and causes I've believed in--to help support people who are trying to make the world a better place in various ways. As a filmmaker, I've sold or optioned five feature-length screenplays and (still) am in post-production on a documentary I shot in China on people's sense of humor there. I met so many wonderful and helpful people in China during my shoot, I have a deep feeling of indebtedness to them and a corresponding commitment to complete the film. As a professor of film studies, I teach courses in screenwriting, documentary film, and film theory & criticism. Overall, the students at Whittier College are great to teach--they are talented, good people who care about others and have a healthy curiosity about the world--and film!Earlier in my career, I was a research psychologist looking at ways to improve the process of integrating children with disabilities into the mainstream of public school life. Work included research, social skills curriculum development, and teacher training with findings published in many refereed journals. Most importantly, as part of a team of people, we developed programs from the results of our research so that children might directly benefit from our work, and findings didn't simply gather dust on library shelves.
