Research And Development Engineer After A Technical ApprenticeshipUkaea After Ici Limited Sep 1965 - Mar 1974Risley, Widnes And Runcorn1970-1974RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER, UK ATOMIC ENERGYAUTHORITY, WARRINGTON, UK.Research and development engineer in Central Technical Services, supporting thereactor design engineers in the development of the primary and secondary heatexchangers of the fast breeder reactors and their unusual liquid metal coolants, especially the Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR). The variable fuel element and coolantchannel geometries and the heat and mass transfer regimes were examined, modelledand analysed to predict any catastrophic bending and instability of the long and veryslender fuel elements. For the Director, the use of computerised calculations by which the projected demand inthe UK for electrical power over a rolling period of 50 years could be met by a flexiblemixed program comprising the different types of nuclear reactors - Magnox, AGR andcivil FBR.1965-1969TECHNICAL APPRENTICE, ICI LIMITED, WIDNES AND RUNCORN, UK.I gained a place on ICI’s professional engineer scheme as a Technical Apprentice inMond Division to undertake a thin sandwich Honours course at the University of Salford. This scheme exposed me to basic and then advanced fabrication techniques, plantmaintenance, drawing office practice, construction and commissioning work. These ledto my final placement in the Central Laboratories’ design office to work from processspecifications through to design and draw process plant items for immediate use in pilot plants.
