Principal Nuclear Inspector, in the roles of engineering assessor, project officer and site inspector - applying my engineering experience and design knowledge to the assessment and inspection of a licensee’s plant and proposals .For sites at Sellafield and Dounreay, I worked on the Plutonium product processing plants and stores, Windscale piles and ancillary plants, fuel ponds, the High Level Waste Plants including the new build Evaporator D, reprocessing facilities, waste silos and shafts, defueling reactors (DFR, PFR, Calder Hall and Chapelcross). I was the lead inspector in NII on the Sellafield site for the development and monitoring of their major Maintenance Re-engineering Programme and for their arrangements for emergency response site-wide to severe accidents.For reactor power plants, I worked on the inspection and assessment of primary and secondary circuits. I assessed the ASME III design reports for the primary circuit of the Sizewell B reactor prior to licensing.For the nuclear submarine facilities at the privatised Royal Dockyards at Rosyth and Devonport and the submarine construction yard at Barrow-in-Furness, I was the lead inspector on the assembly and assessment of their pragmatic modern safety cases and on their relicensing.I was a member of the NII Policy Unit on the licensability of new reactor designs; the NII representative on the HSC's committee on UK licensing and permissioning regimes; and the UK representative to draft and review certain IAEA TecDocs.

The variable fuel element and coolantchannel geometries and the heat and mass transfer regimes were examined, modelledand analysed to predict any catastrophic bending and instability of the long and veryslender fuel elements.For the Director, the use of computerised calculations by which the projected demand inthe UK for electrical power over a rolling period of 50 years could be met by a flexiblemixed program comprising the different types of nuclear reactors - Magnox, AGR andcivil FBR.1965-1969TECHNICAL APPRENTICE, ICI LIMITED, WIDNES AND RUNCORN, UK.I gained a place on ICI’s professional engineer scheme as a Technical Apprentice inMond Division to undertake a thin sandwich Honours course at the University of Salford.This scheme exposed me to basic and then advanced fabrication techniques, plantmaintenance, drawing office practice, construction and commissioning work. These ledto my final placement in the Central Laboratories’ design office to work from processspecifications through to design and draw process plant items for immediate use in pilot plants.
