About John Borders
I have been associated with building and construction for my entire professional life. I was blessed early in my career by the opportunity of working with very talented supervisors, carpenters, concrete finishers, and masons who were not afraid to share their experience and expertise with a young man who was wanting to learn the industry. While attending Western Kentucky University I worked in the construction field every monday, wednesday and every other friday for a local commercial construction company. During my last two years to attending the University full time, I was employed by the University's Physical Plant to work on special projects and perform building inspections, Prior to graduating from Western Kentucky University I began working for myself doing light commercial and industrial work. When the Carter recession hit, my company had over a year's backlog with various industrial clients in the South Central Kentucky Area. As the recession drug on, my backlog disappeared due to cut backs. I then went to work for Hardaway Construction Company in Nashville, TN as a Project Superintendent working in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. I was soon offered a Project Superintendent's position with McDevitt & Street, Inc.'s Nashville, TN division working on healthcare, retail, and mid rise residential projects in North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Washington DC.
Listed skills include Construction, Construction Management, Construction Safety, Construction Supervision, and 2 others.

Vice President
Venture Contracting, Inc.'s main focus has been as an agency Construction Manager representing educational, judicial, and healthcare owners in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As a general contractors we have provided services in the industrial, healthcare, judicial, institutional, and educational projects from the Mississippi River in the West to the Tug Fork in the East.Over the past 20 years we have provided Construction Management (CM) services for the Barren County Board of Education on over 12 individual projects ranging from new elementary schools to renovations at their middle school, technology center and high school. Other owners include the Metcalfe County Board of Education, Breckenridge County Board of Education, Muhlenburg County Board of Education, Lawrence County Board of Education, and others. Our relationship with the Kentucky Department of Education has always been in good standing. We have provided CM or general construction services on judicial centers at Metcalfe County, Simpson County, Ballard County, Montgomery County, and Letcher County for either renovations or new construction. We worked closely with both the owner and the Kentucky Administrative Offices of the Court who was the tenant on the each of the projects. Our healthcare projects included a new birthing center, emergency services suite, admitting suite, physical plant and medical laboratory for T. J. Samson Community Hospital (Glen Joiner, CEO Retired); along with projects at the Taylor County Hospital and Muhlenberg County Hospital. We provided construction services on several health departments and medical office facilities.
Project Manager
When I was first employed by Alliance Corporation I was asked to act as a Project Superintendent on a Distribution Center for Fruit of the Loom in Bowling Green, KY. The schedule was demanding; but, the team was able to complete the Project before the Owner's anticipated completion date, despite a sinkhole opening up under erected structural steel.Upon completion of the distribution center I worked as a project manager on educational and healthcare projects in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This included a 2 year expansion and renovation of the Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, KY while maintaining the school in session with no interruptions. I also served as a project manager for the expansion and renovation of the Taylor County Hospital in Campbellsville, KY.
Project Superintendent
I was a project superintendent working on healthcare projects in Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. These healthcare projects included replacement facilities, a new surgical heart institute facility, intensive care suites, emergency services suites, imaging suites, surgical suites, lithotripsy suite (Walter Reed Army Medical Center) and patient room renovations. The lithotripsy suite at Walter Reed Army Medical Center afforded me a rare opportunity to peek behind the veil of working for the Federal Government. Having worked on for profit hospitals, my team understood the importance of maintaining a department open and operating. Prior to construction I was asked by the Commanding Office for the Urology Department how many days would his department be shut down; to which I asked him how many days he wanted it shut down. With a surprised look on his face he replied "None of course." Upon completion of the project, the Commanding Officer informed me that the staff was amazed that due to our coordination that they suffered no downtime, according to him a first.I worked on a mid-rise (5 story) steel stud framed corporate condo project that at the time was cutting edge on innovative framing systems. The system incorporated post-tension concrete construction foundations with standard light gage metal framing and TrusJoist engineered wood floor framing systems. During construction the site was visited by several design professionals to observe and understand the concept being implemented. The Fulton County, Georgia Building Codes Department requested a few design professional to visit the site to enable them to provide more efficient construction on other Fulton County Projects.I was afforded the opportunity of working on a large ($20 million) retail mall project with an accompanying parking structure in Nashville, TN as an onsite project manager prior to leaving the Company.
Project Superintendent
I was employed by Hardaway Construction as a Project Superintendent. While waiting for the beginning of the project I had been hired for, I worked in the office in estimating and project management on a few projects in Nashville. I estimated, valued engineered and started the management on a small office building in Marietta, GA. In November, 1981 I was sent to North Carolina to construct an administrative facility for a recreational area in the western mountains. By the end of February we were down to installing the interior finishes when I got recalled back to Nashville to take over a project that was behind schedule and over budget. I turned the reigns of the project over to my very able assistant superintendent. The project was an entertainment park that was scheduled to open in about 3 months on May 31st with its first County Music concert. Upon arrival, one of the three buildings were under temporary roof, the second building was in the process of setting of the roof trusses, and the auditorium foundation was just beginning. The project was being constructed on a schedule of two 10 hour shifts 7 days a week. Due to many careless and needless injuries occurring during my first week, on Friday I told everyone to go home and not to return until Monday morning. The following week, accidents fell to zero and production soared and we returned to the two shift schedule. Needless to say, prior to the scheduled first concert all the project's workers were sitting in the newly completed auditorium because the Owner had a special concert for all the workers who was on the project! Needless to say I was blessed with an excellent Project Manager and two outstanding Assistant Superintendents who ran the two shift crews. I handled a few other projects that included industrial and heavy construction in and around the Nashville area.
