Director of International Development (November 2009 – May 2010) The main focus of this post was to provide strategic management and development of Compassion’s international capacity, including Compassion’s network of European and international offices, policy officers and partner organisations. The role included full responsibility for the ECFA coalition and membership of Compassion’s Senior Management Team. In addition, the post incorporated a key role in the development of Compassion’s educational work aimed at influencing future leaders particularly veterinarians, lawyers, agriculturalists and economists worldwide. Director of Programmes & Deputy CEO (February 2007 – October 2009)I returned to the enlarged and re-organised Compassion in World Farming as Director of Programmes and Deputy CEO. I was in charge of a team responsible for campaigns, media, investigation and broadcast work. This post included responsibility for the international representatives of Compassion in several European countries and South Africa. Compassion leads a coalition of 38 animal groups across Europe (European Coalition for Farm Animals - ECFA) that works to further the cause of farm animals throughout the enlarged European Union, and I took the lead role in reinvigorating this group since 2007.I also played a key role in Compassion’s Senior Management Team (SMT) responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic development of the organisation. The SMT’s work included the following: an organisational review of Compassion’s strategic plan (2009-2013); the development of a range of new policies and project management systems; and the development of Compassion’s European work. I represented Compassion on many occasions in public, political, media and academic circles, both here and abroad.

Development Director This position was created in June 2004 to co-ordinate the educational work of WSPA and the development of the WSPA Member Society Network. (I was formally Education and Training Director). As Director, I was responsible for the development of policy and the management and global co-ordination of all work in these areas. The WSPA network then comprised over 750 organisations in more than 145 countries. The post was responsible for supporting and developing this member society network by providing training, equipment and direct grants for projects.WSPA undertakes a variety of education and training projects, many in partnership with member societies in a wide range of countries. I was responsible for developing and managing these projects, which ranged from Kindness Clubs in Africa to an international syllabus for veterinary institutes. The latter project entitled ‘Concepts in Animal Welfare’ has received international acclaim including from international organisation such as the OIE, World Veterinary Association and Commonwealth Veterinary Association. Additionally, I was a member of the World Farmwatch and Universal Declaration Programme Groups that oversaw the development of these international campaigns. From 2006 I was also the co-leader of a major project which was responsible for the development, implementation and training of the WSPA Brand to all staff globally.

Education Director (1993 – June 1998)I became Education Director of CIWF’s educational wing, the CIWF Trust, in 1993. This role included responsibility for co-ordinating the work of the Trust and the production of educational resources. Materials created included a resource pack for veterinary/agriculture students, a slide set for KS3 and KS4 pupils, a primary pack for KS2 and a video resource for sixth form students. Responsibilities also included liaison with animal welfare societies and professional bodies. Talks were given at all levels of the education system. I continued to take a major role in CIWF’s high-profile media campaigns. I was also responsible for training voluntary speakers to represent CIWF and CIWF Trust.Political Director (1992-1993)The principal responsibilities of this post were to lobby politicians at both the Westminster and European Parliaments on CIWF’s campaigns and concerns relating to farm animal welfare. This involved attending relevant parliamentary meetings and committees as well as providing briefings for debates and making representations to governments. I maintained regular contact with civil servants in this country and at the European Commission. I also acted as a main campaigner for CIWF, carrying out media interviews and giving talks at public meetings. I was also a regular contributor to CIWF’s magazine ‘Agscene’

Deputy Head of EducationThe principal responsibilities of the Deputy Head of Education were the management of the regional education programmes, the co-ordination of the field team budgets and resources, and the Education Department’s liaison with animal welfare and environmental organisations and management of specific projects. I was promoted to this position in December 1989. I joined RSPCA in 1978 as Education Officer for Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. I was promoted to the position of Senior Education Officer in 1985.During my time at the RSPCA I gave hundreds of presentations to child, youth and adult audiences, gained wide experience of both radio and TV interviews and the production of educational resources. Being based at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital I also gained practical experience of handling and treating wild animals. I was a member of the ‘Young People and the Environment Group’ (comprising LEA and NGO Environmental Science Advisers and Education Officers in the South West) for ten years and spent several years on the Schools Committee of the Devon Trust for Nature Conservation.
