About John Carleton
Born and raised in the Bronx, Undergraduate degree from St. John’s University In Queens, Master’s degree from John Jay College in Manhattan. Moved to Albany New York to follow a dream. As they say "when life gives your lemons, make lemonade."I'm currently working as a Disaster Preparedness Program Representative 1 for the NYS Office of Emergency Management. In this position I get to wear 2 hats both a grey sky and blue sky. My Blue sky job is in the planning section where I support the dam safety program and Sara Tittle III program. I am also responsible for reviewing and commenting on State and local response plans and Continuity of Operations Plans. My grey sky experience varies greatly and that’s why I won’t just refer to it as a hat. I have been esf 5 planning and esf 7 logistics in many roles including chief roles for activation levels from a level 4-1. Level 4 being a situation we are just monitoring and a level 1 we are fully activated with all emergency support functions activated and federal assistance. In these roles I have had the responsibility of reporting to the executive level of our Agency. My past work history has been a diverse one and that is what makes me different from most people. I have had jobs in healthcare, security, retail and hospitality. Also I have had 2 internships in law enforcement at both the federal and local level. My strongest skills from my experience are building relationships and customer service. These are skills that are important in emergency management. If you provide good customer service you generally do build relationships in this field. I look forward to what challenges are ahead and where my career takes me.
