For the last 15 years, I have had the privilege of raising my two children while also earning two degrees and working as a freelance writer. I have experienced tremendous personal and professional growth while undertaking these fulfilling and challenging roles, but if I had to boil down the secret of my success to three basic elements it would be these:1. Put First Things First: There’s only so much time in the day, and I only have so much energy. Parenting, however, is a 24/7 job – especially when you add work and/or school. Success in any of these areas, let alone all of them, means identifying what’s most important, getting that done first, and either delegating the rest or just learning to let things go.2. Habits Create Your Results: Willpower is like a muscle in that it gets stronger the more it is used. The downside to this metaphor is that, also like a muscle, willpower wears out. This is what makes habits so important. When a behavior is a habit, I don’t have to devote precious willpower to it. The behavior becomes automatic. This makes developing good habits the foundation of high productivity and positive results.3. Build Horizontal Relationships: While most people are familiar with vertical relationships – thinking of some people as above you, and some people below you – this type of relationship always leads to conflict. I’ve always treated my children with the same respect and dignity I would treat a CEO with, and as a result my children are both fantastic human beings that look for ways to positively contribute to our family and the world in general. This skill of building horizontal relationships works just as well in a professional setting as it does in the home. Raising my children while going back to school and working from home has been the greatest privilege of my life. It has also been a great training ground for learning vital career skills. I look forward to using these valuable lessons to continue being a dedicated husband and father while also excelling in a professional role.
