Campaign Director
Climate And Energy Campaigner - It Sector
I worked to research and analyze the energy footprint of top websites and IT companies for a report that benchmarks the progress or lack of progress companies have made toward becoming powered by renewable energy. I am a coauthor on the 2017 report.
Arctic Campaigner
I worked on several projects related to this campaign including work with a strong coalition in Seattle focused on pressuring Shell Oil's fleet in Elliot Bay, including a massive flotilla of kayaktivists that garnered local, national, and international media attention. I was part of several lawsuits regarding threatened species and arctic drilling. In the final weeks in office, President Obama finally took the action we had been calling for - canceling the proposed sale of leases in the US Arctic ocean for oil and gas, and putting the US Arctic off-limits to oil and gas drilling using his authority under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act.
Toxics Campaigner And Policy Analyst
Chemical facilities all over the US pose a catastrophic threat to their local communities, but they could be using safer technologies. I worked in several ways to pressure the Obama Administration to make good on their campaign promise to remove this threat.I worked to garner media attention on the issue, including pieces like these in the Huffington Post and The Nation: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-deans/americas-chemical-plants-are-ticking-time-bombs_b_1757110.htmlhttps://www.thenation.com/article/will-epa-force-chemical-plants-go-safe/I lobbied on Capitol Hill and at the Whitehouse to get chemical companies to switch to safer technologies at their facilities around the country. I worked with a team to create a map of the worst chemical facilities: http://usactions.greenpeace.org/chemicals/map/I worked with and helped grow a coalition of environmental justice, grassroots, environmental, public interest, and labor groups. As part of this work I helped create this website where you can find out more about this critical issue: https://preventchemicaldisasters.org/I researched and authored reports on specifical chemical companies and their involvement in this issue, including an extensive report on Koch Industries lobbying on the issue and the threat their facilities present to local communities:http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/research/toxic-koch-keeping-americans-at-risk-of-a-poison-gas-disaster/http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/wp-content/uploads/legacy/Global/usa/binaries/2010/6/kuehne-plant.pdfI also successfully pressured Levi's to commit to a zero discharge of hazardous chemicals as part of Greenpeace's Detox campaign. You can see their commitment here: http://levistrauss.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Commitment-to-Zero-Discharge-of-Hazardous-Chemicals.pdf
Southern Vermont Field Organizer
I successfully organized in Southern Vermont to get the Vermont State Senate to vote against the re-licencing of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. The plant officially closed on December 29, 2014.
Field Organizer
I built and grew a volunteer network across the 29th congressional district of NY (now redrawn) to pressure candidates for Congress to improve their platform on climate change during the 2008 election cycle. In North Carolina I worked in coalitions of environmental organizations to build support for the Waxman-Markey climate bill and to stop the expansion of Duke Energy's Cliffside Coal Plant.
