John is a member of the Blakes Business Crimes, Investigations & Compliance group and has experience assisting clients with internal investigations related to bribery, fraud, sanctions, and securities offences, as well as defending clients against criminal and regulatory charges. Additionally, John advises clients on anti-bribery and corruption and sanctions compliance programs and conducting anti-corruption and sanctions risk assessments and due diligence. John also defends organizations accused of criminal and regulatory offences.Additionally, John represents clients in civil disputes related to corporate governance, plans of arrangement, investment negligence, and contractual interpretation. SELECT EXPERIENCERepresentative matters in which John has been involved include:Key member of compliance monitorship team for SNC-Lavalin pursuant to the probation order imposed by the Quebec Court as part of its sentencing on charges of fraud in Libya;International anti-corruption investigations relating to allegations of improper payments to government officials in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe, and China;International investigations relating to allegations of sanctions violations; Domestic investigations related to insider trading and other securities offences;Conducting international anti-corruption and sanctions risk assessments;Defending companies against environmental charges;Defending financial institutions in litigation arising from allegations of investment negligence; andConducting anti-corruption and sanctions due diligence for clients in a variety of industries, including the extractive sector.PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIESJohn is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association, and the Canadian Bar Association. John provides pro bono legal services through the Queen’s Bench Amicus and the Civil Claims Duty Counsel projects. He also advises non-profit organizations on fraud investigations and response.
