The Academy, which was founded in 1780 buy John Adams and others, launched a series of initiative in 1998 to improve public understanding of humanities and to encourage development of tools in support of humanities research. I helped define the initiative while serving at the NHA. After I retired in 2004, I began working with the Academy on the initiatives on a part-time basis (i.e.,about 15 hours a week). Under the central Humanities Indicators Project, I worked with Various humanities societies and association to win cooperation for the initiative. I Developed proposals and play a central role in a sub-project, Humanities Departmental Survey, the second of which is underway.

Representing about 100 organizations interested in federal policies a that affect research and other activities inthe humanities. We provided testimony and support for the NationalEndowment for the Humanities, parts of other federal entities such as the Library of Congress. WE responded to proposed regulations that affect our members, and so forth. NHA is a 501(c)4 nonprofit association.

In 1969 I wrote a proposal to the Ford Foundation which resulted in a five-year grant to professionalize the discipline of linguistics. At the time, I was director of development for theCenter for Applied Linguistics, a nonprofit research organization established by the Ford Foundation in 1959. When the grant was made, I was asked to establish a Washington office for LSA under a shared agreement with the Center for Applied Linguistics. The office was established and we set up a newsletter, Negotiated with hotels for annual meetings and so forth. After a couple of years, I was happy to turn over hotel visits and selection to a colleague. I served as deputy director of CAL and, for 15 months, acting director. I retired from CAL in 1983 and continued at LSA part-time. It proved impossible for me to keep the part-time LSA job and secure of companion job elsewhere. I worked briefly a the Consortium of Social Science Associations in 1985-87 before movin to the NHA job in early 1987.
