The Academy, which was founded in 1780 buy John Adams and others, launched a series of initiative in 1998 to improve public understanding of humanities and to encourage development of tools in support of humanities research. I helped define the initiative while serving at the NHA. After I retired in 2004, I began working with the Academy on the initiatives.
Representing about 100 organizations interested in federal policies a that affect research and other activities inthe humanities. We provided testimony and support for the NationalEndowment for the Humanities, parts of other federal entities such as the Library of Congress. WE responded to proposed regulations that affect our members, and so forth. NHA is.
In 1969 I wrote a proposal to the Ford Foundation which resulted in a five-year grant to professionalize the discipline of linguistics. At the time, I was director of development for theCenter for Applied Linguistics, a nonprofit research organization established by the Ford Foundation in 1959. When the grant was made, I was asked to establish a Washington.
