Tacoma Public Utilities was one of the first municipalities in the United States to build a fiber optic network. I was brought in because of my long history of extensive construction experience. I ensured that the fiber and coaxial plant was constructed safely and to the standards and procedures dictated by the Utility and conformed to the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and the Washington Administrative Code (WAC-32&45). When an opening in the Network Technician department presented itself I accepted a position believing it would broaden my already wide-ranging background in Communications. I soon became part of a three person fiber team tasked with connecting all power substations with fiber optics. Other responsibilities were to implement an Institutional Network (INET) connecting all Tacoma Schools and an extensive Broadband Service Network (BBS) connecting Tacoma Businesses and Tacoma Public Libraries. Our redundant ‘Fiber Ring’ construction provides reliability that is unsurpassed in the United States naming Tacoma the “#1 wired City” in 2000.

As Project and Construction Manager for Summit Communications I was responsible for all new and rebuild construction for the state of Washington. One primary task was the implementation of Fiber Optics for the elimination of Headends and the reduction of amplifier cascades. During my employment with Summit I successfully eliminated three CATV Headends and completed two coaxial rebuilds. I also managed numerous CATV Plant extensions. My responsibility required me to procure all contractors, materials, and work with State, County, City and Utility officials for overhead and underground right of way compliance.

Under my leadership as owner of JJET Construction, we completed a countless miles of new construction and many more miles of coaxial rebuilds. I grew the company from two employees to thirty-two employees and had many sub-contractors. To successfully build a company over a nine year period I had to set high standards and develop and train quality employees to meet these standards. Highlighted achievements over the 9 ½ year would include over 1500 miles of rebuild for Viacom CATV along with many miles of new construction. JJET also completed new construction extensions throughout Washington and Oregon for many other CATV operators.
