Elected in May, 2010, John R. Hoopes is the Vice President of the Salt River Project. John also serves on the boards of Trapper Mining, Inc., New West Energy Corporation, Papago Park Center, Inc., and Salt Verde Financial Corporation. Before his 2010 election as Vice President, John served on the SRP Council from 1997 to 2005, ultimately as its Chairman. John is a fourth-generation Arizonan and lives in family home where its Chandler farm was located. His great-grandfather was on the first elected Council of SRP. His father served on the SRP Board from 1948 through 1978. John’s SRP service is motivated by this personal connection with the legacy of SRP, as well as his belief in its bright future. After graduating from Mesa High School, John received a BA from Brigham Young University and a law degree from the University of Arizona in 1979, where he served as an editor of the Arizona Law Review. John was selected to serve a two-year federal court judicial clerkship following graduation. He then practiced first with a large Phoenix law firm and since 1998 with the Chandler firm Hoopes, Adams & Alexander, PLC, www.halaw.com. John’s mediation and litigation practice focuses on construction, real estate, securities and a variety of business disputes. Listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Arizona's Finest Lawyers, John is a former a judge pro tem in the Maricopa County Superior Court Arizona Court of Appeals. John remains a member of the firm he founded, but since his election as Vice President of SRP his time devoted to the practice of law has been limited. John is an owner and operator of a family cattle ranch south of Globe-Miami. Among other community activities, John previously served as President of the Board of the Southwest Museum Foundation and is currently a member of the Boards of the Valley of the Sun United Way, Arizona Mexico Commission and the Phoenix Zoo. John and his wife Nancy are the parents of four children and grandparents of four.
