In an oilfield services career that has spanned over three decades and dozens of service lines operating onshore and offshore in over 50 countries, I continue to be fascinated by how this industry changes and evolves. I have enjoyed executive responsibility for multi-cultural organizations with thousands of employees and sales in excess of $2B, which has included R&D and manufacturing operations in both Western and Eastern Hemisphere markets, but I am constantly reminded that this experience is more of a perspective of what this industry used to be and not what it is today or will look like tomorrow. Disruption and innovation are aggressively catering to the E&P industry’s evolving drilling, completion and workover trends. New resource plays, technologies, services and business models are commoditizing the establishment and unseating the strategic market value that almost all of the traditionally recognized oilfield services used to boast. If you dig deeper you will see some of these businesses, which are inevitably household names, are adapting to cope while others are adapting to win. The oilfield sector will probably continue to be dominated by the pillars of the industry, the multi-national service companies with big balance sheets, but the ingredients that populate their successful business recipes are changing right in front of us. This is what gets me up in the morning and continually inspires me to find people that understand how strategy is shifting in the industry, to listen to what customers value, to understand which assets or services generate attractive economic returns, to ask questions, to find those who are driving change and….to understand what this industry is evolving into versus what I did for the last 30 years!
