Dr. Paine foretells his death in the first lines of the book. He dies shortly thereafter narrating his story as a spirit occupying his friend’s funeral home. David chronicles being prepared, waked and tops it off with a humorous recounting of his funeral. Tempest’s ArcTempest’s Arc was written to encourage my nieces to fall in love with math. Satire is employed to highlight the vagaries of mathematics and provides the high ground from which to playfully taunt the field of study. The tale focuses on the life of the main character, Tempest Arrck. It chronicles her love for math and the deep feelings she has for her lifelong friend, Caleb Baxter. The story follows Tempest’s battles to bring precision to what she perceives as an imprecise world. The young woman’s very principled positions will bring a smile to your face, although her pointed opinions often bring heartburn to her math teachers.
