Associate Professor - Chemical EngineeringUniversity Of Newcastle Feb 1989 - Dec 2021New South Wales, AustraliaThroughout my years as an academic I was honoured play a role in some significant achievements, as summarised below: Computer Aided Thermal Analysis (CATA) Technique (1998 – present) Single most significant contribution to the field fundamental Thermal Research was the development of the CATA and related techniques, from its inception in 1998 (funded through the ARC SPIRT Scheme). Recent work employing the techniques allowed for never before associations between physical, thermal and chemical changes to be measured together during solid fuel pyrolysis. The work continues and is most relevant to solid transformations and the detailed behavior of recalcitrant substances in thermal processes.Major Industrial Funded Research Grant and Facility Establishment - BHP Billiton (2010-2014)As Chief Investigator on a Large Research Program funded by BHP Billiton – Ironmaking Materials Research, (2010 –2014), $6 million, this program instigated the establishment of the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER) through the purchase of the former BHP Billiton Central Research Laboratory facility, for $10 million, for which I was involved in the negotiations. As Department Head, I steered the migration of a large part of Chemical Engineering to occupy 50% of the facility.Major Education Partnership and Inter University Collaboration– Glencore (Xstrata) (2012-2015)I was involved in the planning for and became a founding Network Representative for the University of Newcastle on the Operations Committee of The International Energy Centre (IEC) The IEC was a unique joint initiative between The University of Newcastle, The University of Queensland, The University of Western Australia and Glencore, established to deliver a highly innovative Master of Energy Studies program. -
