I've been a freelance writer, journalist and occasional broadcaster since November 1988, when I began a brief placement at BBC Highland in Inverness. I specialise in the op-ed opinion column and have written for The Scotsman, the Glasgow Herald, and on occasion The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, and such eclectic publications from Index on Censorship to the Catholic Herald.But my versatility extends besides to the long essay, the light sketch, the interview or profile, the brief commentary, and - when required - hard news copy. I appear occasionally on radio and television and am the author of seven books - No Great Mischief If You Fall (1993), Highlanders: A History of the Gael (1996), Dynasty: A History of the Stuarts (1998), Banner in the West: a Spiritual History of Lewis and Harris (2008), When I Heard the Bell: the Loss of the IOLAIRE (2009) - which was shortlisted for the Saltire Prize - River of Fire: The Clydebank Blitz (2010) and None Dare Oppose: The Laird, the Beast and the People of Lewis (2011.)I have won seven awards and remain the youngest-ever Scottish Journalist of the Year (1990; I was twenty-four.) I have two unpredictable Jack Russell Terriers, own too many books and drink far too much Earl Grey tea.

I began writing regularly for the Scottish Daily Mail from February 2002, when The Herald reduced my contract. When I parted company with that paper finally, in September 2002, I began a weekly coilumn for the paper and continue with that and other duties, such as Saturday essays and op-ed leaders.

I began writing freelance pieces for The Herald from May 1989 and became a weekly columnist from October 1991. My work won six six awards for the paper - Journalist of the year 1990; Young Journaliat of the Year 1990, 1991; Columnist of the Year (Commended), 1991; Feature Writer of the Year (Commended), 1996; and British Regional Press Columnist of the Year (1996.)
