My final rotation at Thar Process was during the summer of 2019 and I had a similar role as my first two rotations. I continued work on the Fishbowl Inventory project by helping to set up a scanner that will be used by receiving to log and retrieve inventory. The new project that I was working on was a project for a food production company that wanted to use supercritical CO2 in their pasteurization process. This project required mass and energy balances along with heat exchanger calculations. I was in communication with the customers throughout the entire project to make sure that they were updated on the design and progress. We designed a pasteurization vessel that needed to be loaded and unload with a linear motion system. The linear motion system had to be outsourced and I was assigned to communicating with the outsourcing companies by finding companies that could meet our needs, setting up in person meetings, and sending/receiving design updates. Finally, during July of 2019 I was working on an R&D project to record data for a patent into in-line winterization of hemp and hops. Extraction involves oil and waxes of the plant material and the equipment that we were patenting would separate most of the waxes from the output in-line and reduce post-processing time. The group of process engineering co-ops ran a pilot system with hemp and hops to determine the wax content of the output at different temperatures and CO2 flow rates.

Thar Process designs and produces supercritical carbon dioxide extraction and purification equipment for industrial scale processes. As a process engineering co-op at Thar Process, I have developed a robust portfolio of skills and experience. I started my first rotation at the beginning of May 2018, and I was assigned to do background research into crystallization techniques for cannabinoid oils. I performed mass and energy balances for the project to give the R&D department values to start their testing with. The research was used to create a new purification project that was rolled out in December 2018. In June 2018, I was trained in the process of creating and editing P&IDs in AutoCAD and, with a co-worker, streamlined our current P&ID’s into templates that could be used to create Bill of Materials. I also created prototype and as built P&IDs for the systems that were created in the summer and fall of 2018. My most involved project during my first and second rotations was implementing the Fishbowl Inventory Tool. I went in depth on all aspects of the system so that I could educate the engineering, the accounting, and the inventory departments on how to use their respective parts of the system. Fishbowl Implementation also included redesigning the fabrication floor so that the inventory can be tracked and organized.

I worked in Dr. Robert Parker's Lab and performed computational research using MatLab and Simulink regarding Acute Kidney Injury. Research was with the Swanson School of Engineering in conjunction with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The goal was to build a simulation to test a model built to use blood creatinine levels to detected Acute Kidney Injury. My Matlab script read in UPMC patient data from an MS Excel sheet and then used Simulink to fit that data to the model. After seeing how the model fit one patient, Dr. Parker and I would perfect the model to fix fitting issues with that patient.
