He also has taught in the Department of English at the University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina University, and at various locations in the City University of New York system from 2002-2012. From 1999-2002, Dr. Maerhofer also resided in Japan where he taught English and studied Japanese literary, cultural, and political history. Dr. Maerhofer's research interests include: transnational aesthetics and politics; postcolonial literature, theory, and film; world literatures; modernism and the avant-garde; 19th-21st century comparative poetry and poetics; 20th century visual art and theory; modern and contemporary literary, cultural, and political theory; Marxism; Caribbean and Africana Studies; Pan-Asian Studies and Japanese intellectual and political history.
