Photopharmica was a University of Leeds spin out company and a collaboration between the Departments of Colour Chemistry and The Centre for Photobiology and Photodynamic Therapy (Microbiology).Research involved the development of new singlet oxygen generating dyes for use in photodynamic therapy, as a way of treating cancer and microbial infections (including drug resistant MRSA). The development of novel biologically active dyes led to over £5m of research funding for a Phase II medical trial.• Synthesis of novel synthetic dyes, with a view to increasing singlet oxygen generation and biological efficacy.• Synthesis from lab scale through to pilot scale, with a view to increasing reaction efficiency and commercial viability. • Microbiological Testing of efficacy of formulations in vitro to aid Trial protocol. Design of new testing methods using bacteria and tissue samples, working primarily with staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa. Work involved all aspects of the testing protocol, from preparation of plates and tissue samples/bacteria, to use of medical lasers and measuring/recording total cell kill.• Working directly with teams from both Chemistry and Microbiology disciplines.• Required regular written reports and meetings at all levels within the company.
