I am best known for my work with Michael Griggs and the late Bear Republic Theater of Santa Cruz, notably for "SIGNALS, Mens Lives, Mens Dreams." Originally created in 1975 in Los Angeles as a project of the Mark Taper Forum Laboratory, SIGNALS played in Santa Cruz then returned to L.A. for runs at Synthaxis and Company Theaters; was invited to perform at an international theater event: the New Theatre Festival in Baltimore, MD. From there SIGNALS played at Cafe La Mama in New York and, after receiving funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Commission, went on to tour California prisons and community centers. Other accomplishments include two new-play contest winners (2008 and 1998, respectively) "The Annunciation" and "Swelling," both of which also received full production at that time. at the Blue Room Theater in Chico. These plays are included in the just published "RENO and 2 Other Short Plays of Fear and Transformation." My short story, “Spirit Level,” won first place in the annual writing competition run by The Friends of the Sacramento Public Library (2015). I gained a measure of national fame (some four minutes or so) when I made a guest appearance on National Public Radio's “Morning Edition,” in 1994, reading an original commentary.I am fortunate in having worked for over a decade in classrooms with special needs preschool children, including 8 years in autism clinic working one-on-one with children on the spectrum. I think of this as 'continuing education in compassion.'Also: 12 years as a Traffic Violator School (TVS) Instructor. The conditions of the job included: becoming an 'expert' on traffic law and safety; teaching same to adults who did not want to be there (some of whom could be hostile) and doing it all with humor and in an entertaining manner. The TVS classroom turned out to be an excellent place to perfect the skills of story-telling.
