I work in transport engineering and planning. Before joining academic in 1998, I worked for consulting engineers for 14 years. I have been involved in all stages of the promotion of transport schemes including policy formulation, modelling and forecasting, operational analysis and economic appraisal, design and construction, and evaluation. I have experience across all modes of transport and have a particular specialism in cycling. I am a member of the Welsh Government Roads Review Panel and I am a Commissioner on the North Wales Transport Commission. I was an assessor for the Research Excellence Framework 2021 Unit of Assessment 12 Engineering panel. I was chair of the Universities’ Transport Study Group. I chaired the Editorial Advisory Panel for the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers Municipal Engineer. I have edited two books and authored the book ‘Designing for cycle traffic’. I was a member of the civil engineering degree accreditation body the Joint Board of Moderators and continue to chair accreditation visits to universities part of their panel of assessors. I chaired the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Individual Route Assessment Panel, and was a member of its Membership and Skills Strategy Board.Projects have included the following: futures support for the DfT Office for Science; evaluation of Transforming Cities Fund and the Local and Regional Transport Analysis team, and in the West of England, the e-scooter trial, Local Sustainable Transport Fund, Access Fund and Future Transport Zone; autonomous vehicle research on VENTURER, CAPRI and MultiCAV; traffic engineering research on side road crossings for Sustrans and the Road Safety Trust; road danger reduction research in Nepal. The many cycle traffic related projects include the development of design standards and guidance, and training of designers in relation to cycling.
