SLAM = STEM + Learning+Arts+Makerspace.Not all coding and robots - SLAM vacation programmes engage kids in hands-on, experiential learning across all STEM disciplines within exciting, immersive, and narrative based projects that also include arts and humanities.SLAM has re-thought the provision of STEM Professional Learning for primary school teachers. Rather than single days with limited follow-up, SLAM effectively embeds a professionally qualified facilitator within a school for a whole year. Negotiated with the Principal and called Next Level Professional Learning, the program will occur over one year with the core program covering two terms. We are working to obtain NESA endorsement in June 2018The programme will involve a number of workshops with all staff and more intensive training and mentoring of a small group of teachers. These may be stage leaders or technologically capable and passionate teachers.The lead group is then supported by SLAM in passing on their expertise to their colleagues.

Jacaranda Engineering Consultants (JEC) was created by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney as a simulated engineering consultancy company located on the University’s Camperdown campus. It was managed by an experienced industry professional - myself - and operated in accordance with normal commercial principles and practice.It was established as a pilot programme to provide work experience for forty three 3rd and 4th year undergraduate and masters students - now acting as real consultants - within the Engineering and IT Faculty, and operated during the 2016/7 Summer vacation. Consultants worked in multi-disciplinary teams on projects submitted by engineering companies who also committed to the provision of at least one face-to-face interaction with their JEC teams per week.JEC provided innovative solutions and reports which provided acknowledged real value to their clients over the 8 week duration of the programme. At the same time, I established an experiential learning regime resulting in our consultants/students understanding how to work within, and manage, a modern commercial engineering consultancy.JEC’s goal was for consultants to enter as students; and leave as engineers and team leaders. I believe we largely achieved that result

On my return from Indonesia I joined Telstra's Employee Relations Group as General Manager, Organisation Development where Iwas responsible for organisational structure; leadership continuity; and implementing the first internet-based HR management systems.I designed and implemented a simple Manager Review process which saw the number of reviews of Telstra employees increase from around 10% to 90% in just two years and replaced the complicated and extensive public service classification and pay system with a five level pay and delegation structure.

Indonesia

Headed the international engineering team which won a $1Bn domestic telecommunications network contract in Indonesia in 1994, and subsequently implemented the first optical fibre switching and transmission network in Indonesia (Central Java). I was instrumental in the granting of USD500M non-recourse funding for the project and recruited over 50 Telstra people (including two Directors) to manage the project.I arranged for two Queensland teachers to join a small International Primary school in Semarang to teach the first two years of High school to children of the Australian members of the consortium.

Introduced the manufacture of optical fibre cable and submarine repeater assembly to Australia (STC’s facility at Port Botany, Sydney) as part of the USD750M PacRim cable procurement for which I had total responsibility. Exports totalled more than $600M.

Conceived, curated and implemented OTC’s $600,000 interactive “0011” exhibition at the National Science and Technology Centre in Canberra in 1990.This replaced the inaugural Japanese science exhibition which was their Bi-Centennial gift to Australia.

Conceived, curated and implemented OTC’s $600,000 Bi-Centenary exhibition “From Settlement to Satellites” in 1998. One year in Sydney at OTC's International Exchange in Paddington and than one year at the Melbourne Museum. Open and staffed every day of the week, it received 10,000 visitors on one Melbourne Cup day and averaged three school tours per day.
