After 25 years of teaching high school mathematics, my vision for 21st century learners is that education is like a vessel, which is steered by the contributions of parents, teachers, students and the community. We must involve everyone in our quest to help students evolve into the finest, and most contributory, citizens of the future. We must take creative approaches to address the curricula we are responsible to explore with our students. Teachers must determine the strengths and weaknesses of their pupils through formative, or feedback-based, assessments. Students can then utilize this feedback to alter their academic practices, maximizing their potential. Simply put, teachers are the architects of student achievement.Accountability for this comes in the form of reciprocal, or peer-to-peer, teaching. This type of engagement will improve student comprehension of the topics and allow them to express their individuality and creativity across academic disciplines. Students must also be given chances to explore their aptitudes and the school acts to provide resources regarding their distinct interests. Providing guidance for a student to plan for their post-graduation experience is of utmost importance.Moreover, every class must have a technological component. We, as educators, must embrace the current to which the river of this generation is flowing. Interactions between students via devices are commonplace and provide us a medium where academics can be infused. We must expect technological fluency in our student body, as their post-graduate worlds will require it. This exposure to multiple perspectives will help foster growth mindsets. Community involvement in the development of our youth cannot be forgotten. Personal interactions need to be fostered, now more than ever, as social media and device use is creating tendencies of introversion in adolescents. Some facets of life simply cannot be explored inside of a classroom. The school and community need to set up cadres of students, who will assemble and work together to achieve goals for the community. Students need to be immersed, as much as possible, in team-oriented objectives. The development of intra-personal skills will be an asset when they enter the workforce. We will call on our parents to join in the effort, to lead teams of students in these endeavors. With parents aligned in our service, students will see that civic outreach does not end when they graduate, but is a lifelong experience for people of all ages.
